There was a time not too long ago when I felt very lost, alone and confused. I had a good job in Human Resources, was paid well for what I did and loved my work family but I had a bad case of the Mondays. I had no idea why I was so unhappy and that felt, well yucky. I was emotionally flood; reflecting back I know I felt frustrated, scared and sad but at the time- in that place - the best descriptor I could muster was "yucky". It was like that vague feeling set up camp in my soul and had no intention of leaving it's post. Can you relate?
The voice in my head, you know the one that craves the known - the alter ego of fear - kept whispering to me that I should be satisfied, even happy, with a secure, well-paying job. Who was I to want more? I felt so conflicted because I wasn't being true to myself. And by being a shadow of myself I was falling short of the impact I wanted to make in the world.
And the more I tried to fake happy, the worse I felt. I didn’t have a dream, a goal or a plan. I was floating down the stream of life and all of a sudden I felt like I was slowly drowning. I was living in the moment, expecting the skies to part and *it* to appear. You know *it*, the truth that was going to be earth shattering, the secret of life, the BIG answer to “why am I here?”
Only you can awaken your passion and discover your potential.
That realization was scary for me!
I have to figure it out? Gulp.
No one will just tell us what to do with our life?
That thought process is somewhat contrary to what we are spoon fed growing up. As kiddos every move we make is controlled or dictated to some extent. We get used to being told what to do and having someone else think for us. Surely someone knows what you should do with your life, right? Even in our schools they don't really help you figure it out, but that is a post for another day.
So from that deep, dark place of stuck I started to wake up to my reality- and more importantly the possibilities. I was purposeful in how I created my day. I put much of my time and effort into everything other than my narrowly defined job description and crafted a career that was better suited to my passions.
Are you ready to bring the action? Here are a few ideas:
- Join a committee or project team to learn new skills and interact with different departments to expand your skill sets and network.
- Accept challenging volunteer positions to learn new tasks and give back.
- Enroll in workshops and training programs to learn more about yourself.
- Read books and blogs to soak in bits of wisdom like confetti at a birthday party from those who have come out on the other side and have the courage to live their dreams. We all need inspiration- and to see results- so we know we can do it too!
- Focus on those things that energize you and figure out how to do more of what makes you light up.
- Hire a coach. That’s when things really start to get real. It's a quick start and I promise you will never look back. The journey is as important as the destination.
Join, accept, enroll, read, focus, hire...sometimes you just have to bring the action! That is where the magic happens.
I have the littlest piece of that stuck feeling with me and treasure it- similar to a souvenir used to remember a special trip long after the dust has settled on your suitcase. I kept it knowing that I had to honor my experience by sharing it one day. I want to use my story and the expertise I've gained to help those who want more- and guide them to what's next.
I am a dream chaser.
I help people ignite their passion.
